Things are Looking Up

Basically, I'm moving on in life. And blogging too. I'm making an announcement here at a later date but for now all you need to know is I have been busy busy busy planning HUGE things and I mean HUGE but you'll find more out later.

Anyway, so I'm organising all this stuff and I realised I've been calling myself Scarlett Haines when I'm married now and I changed my last name. Which is really cool.

But I think the point I'm trying to make is stay tuned because things are looking up! :)

Summary: Gee ... I always wanted to write a book. I never thought I would but then again I could be wrong. Here is a collection of some of the past few years rants as broadcast on WDMT 102.3 The Mountain as part of my show Rising at Ten.

Review: This book was so good. I thought it would be alright but nope it was soo good. Jim Rising has got to be one of the coolest guys around.

The books is short but it is full of humour.

I found Jim Rising to be a fascinating guy and his book is pure genius. There's little else I can say about the book. Definitely check it out.

In My Mailbox

This week in my mailbox was nothing. Mostly because I just finished with schooling for the year and I now have a wedding to get ready for next month. I can tell that things are going to get incredibly hectic soon.

The men I dated are all nice enough guys, I just took the opportunity to make light of their idiosyncrasies and things that happened in my relationships with them. With the help of my "advisory committee" I learn that physical appearance goes hand in hand with what's inside. Join me as I learn the ins and outs of online dating.

Review: This book is so funny. And incredibly interesting. When I read the description I knew I would enjoy this book. So basically, I wanted to read it for a change of pace.

As I'm getting married next month I thought this one would be really interesting to read to see what I was missing out on in the dating scene. And Annie Earley was a very interesting woman and she met some very interesting people online.

There's not much more that I can say about What Was I Thinking? Other than it is a really interesting and good light read. Anyone looking for a book about the not so great side of online dating then this book would definitely suit you.

I've read a few other reviews of this book after reading it and the ones I found were all negative which I thought was unfortunate but at the end of the day you cannot please everyone.

TRUSTING IN YOURSELF

Trusting your own gut feelings is one of the best gifts of being a human or an intelligent being. We all get that little ‘twinge’ when something just isn’t right. When that happens…LISTEN TO IT! Trust yourself or your ‘gut’ some call it. Trust it at all times, it will never steer you wrong.

When I was young I lived in the inner-city of Washington , DC . The neighborhood I called home, had gangs, drugs, muggers, killers, and lots of kids and family nearby. However, with all of these things present, I didn’t realize that my gut instincts were strengthening with each day I played outside, walked to school, to the bus, or traveled the city alone.

I never understood why my grandmother, affectionately named NaNa, didn’t want me to leave my block to go to the store alone. Or why, I wasn’t allowed to cut through the alleys to get to my cousin’s house, and the numerous list of things I was told to watch out for.

My main character in EXPLORER X – Alpha realizes that something isn’t quite right with the immunization he is given. Aadi takes the initiative as asks the Doctor why it is being given to him. In addition to this finding, Aadi confirms his concerns with others.

Here are some steps to take in trusting yourself in all things;

LISTEN TO THAT ‘TWINGE’ IN YOUR GUT

When you are in a situation with a friend or an adult, and you get that feeling that something isn’t quite right, then you are most likely correct. Learn yourself, and test this ability.

If your friend tells you that you should sneak out to go to that great party that so-and-so is going to, then you feel this tickle in your tummy, and you hesitate. This is your gut talking to you. It’s telling you … hold on … don’t jump into this.

Listen to it. Find out how your gut talks to you. Think of all those times you got into major trouble, and ponder over what you felt just before you did the deed that got you into that mess. That’s how you learn how your psyche talks to you.

TAKE A STEP BACK, AND ASK QUESTIONS

Never, ever, feel like you don’t have the right to ask a question. Asking a question only gets you in trouble when it hasn’t been asked, or the person of whom you are asking the question doesn’t want to give you an answer.

Don’t think I’m right on this? Test it, and think back to times when the person of whom you asked a question reacted negatively. In most cases, it is because they don’t want to give you an answer.

Asking the question is never, ever wrong. You have the right. So use it when you are in those situations where your gut is telling you that something is just not adding up.

IF IT DOESN’T ADD UP THEN IT DOESN’T ADD UP

When something doesn’t make sense, or the story just sounds down right disjointed, and your gut is telling you that something is off. Then trust your gut, something is off.

This is a saying my Nana used to tell me when I would give her a scenario of what a friend told me, or did to me.

“Honey, if it don’t add up, it won’t add up. Something is definitely not right with that story.”

Do you know in each instance she said this, she was absolutely correct.

TAKE ACTION

If you get that feeling something isn’t right take action.

In EXPLORER X – Alpha Aadi and Eirena, his co-pilot investigate their gut feeling that something is off about their camp with their team. They find that terrible things have been done to them.

There are several ways to take action. Here are some;

- Just tuck the knowledge away, and wait for the truth to reveal itself. Believe it or not this happens a lot in life. The truth has a way of coming out. Sometimes it happens quickly, and sometimes it takes a long, long time.

- Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in order to get the answers you want. You can ask anyone questions, and that may solve the mystery.

- Run away or stay away. If you are in a situation where an adult or a peer appears to be leading you in a direction that you feel is not safe. Run. There is no harm in running away from or staying away from someone.

TAKE ACTION

Realize that you have control of your destiny. No matter what happens to you in your life, you can learn from it all and become a better person. Making the same mistakes will become harder the more you learn to trust your gut instincts, and yourself.

Today I am here with Robbie from Boy With Books.

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

I started reviewing books about eight years ago (!) for Di Herald (www.genrefluent.com) and her website, and eventually I wanted to go further, and that's when I started experimenting with blogging.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

Sure is! I am a *huge* musical theater nerd, I have over 300 cast albums, and I've acted in over 20 shows. My original direction in college was musical theater, but it was sapping the fun, so I decided to go the librarian route and keep music as my side hobby.

Describe a typical day in your week.

Currently I have no job. :( So, still looking. I tend to wake up a little later than a lot of people, like around ten. I check on the kitties (Ajax, a boy, and Kizzy, a girl) first, then I do my various toiletries. I get online and check my mail, website, twitter, etc. Then I'll probably play some sort of video game for a little bit, or be on the computer in some way. Then I eat lunch (I only eat breakfast during the school year) and read for awhile, then I do some cleaning/cooking/miscellaneous errands. Whoo.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

I don't know...I was born in Chicago, and that tends to surprise some people, but anyone who knows me probably already knows that.

What kind of books are your favourite?

Good ones. No, seriously, even in genres that I don't often like there are good books that I like, and there are bad ones in genres that I usually like. So my favourite kind of books are good ones.

Why do you like to read?

I like being able to go somewhere else, see someone dealing with other problems. Whether it's the magical land of Serendair or Scranton, it's not where I am.

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

They pay for the author's kids to go to college.

.What do you use as a bookmark?
Ahaha! I've used everything from toilet paper to mail to leaves to bookmarks to business cards to pieces of cardboard.

Describe your ideal reading place.

A comfy/squishy chair, preferably with an ottoman or somewhere to put my feet up, and usually by a window.

Where on Earth is Scarlett?

In case you hadn't noticed I have no reviews. I have been kind of lacking in posts too. This is just a post to say sorry, I'm not gone. I just have exams and then I have a wedding to plan. Also, I have no house for a few months so I'm between houses and everything is just a bit hectic. But never fear because I will return in December or January. Hey everyone, today I am happy to introduce Reggie of The Undercover Book Lover (Not Really)

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?
I came across a blog called Garden of Books. It was by Iryna. I was really impressed so I created my blog. I wanted to show people how great books are or can be.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?
I LOVE to write. Currently, I'm working on a 60,000 word novel called Maybe it's Fate. I also love writing poems. Apart from that, I love playing with my dog, Fluffy (he's a pug), blogging, playing badminton, and roller-blading. Weird combination huh?

Describe a typical day in your week.
On weekdays (if I have school), I go to school, work on my homework, blog, email, and sleep (at midnight (hehe)). On weekends, I sleep until ten o'clock, go to the mall and watch a movie, and hang out with my friends or family. On Sundays, I go to Church.

What is one thing not many people know about you?
Hmm...that's hard. My friends don't know I have a book blog and that I LOVE music. They only know I like to read and write (mostly).

What kind of books are your favourite?
Any adult fiction (not errotica) and YA genre books. I also love the classics!

Why do you like to read?
I didn't actually like to read up until the fourth grade. I hated to read. But my dad and my aunt forced me to read until I grew to love it. Now, I'm obsessed! haha

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?
Movies will NEVER beat out the book version. I've yet to see a movie do that. If you know any, tell me!

Tell us a little about your blog.
My blog contains YA and Adult Fiction book reviews. I also have a feature called The Weekly Pen. TWP is where I have some poems, short stories, or articles written by me. Soon, I'm going to start holding contests!

What do you use as a bookmark?
I have this dog bookmark my dad got me in Singapore. I LOVE it! I've had it for about four years. Unfortunately, the clip on it is breaking. Oh, well. I love it anyways!

Describe your ideal reading place.
Rainy Day + Charamel Macchiato + Books = Me very happy in Starbucks!

Got any books you think people should definitely read before they die?
Not really...maybe Lisa Schroeder and Tom Clancy? Those are a few of my favorite authors.

Got any future plans for your blog?
As soon as I have about 50-60 followers, I'm going to start holding contests. Also, I'm asking around if I could interview some authors.

Today I have with me Kim from The Book Butterfly.

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

Before I became a blogger, I didn’t really have a forum where I could talk to other people who felt as fervent about books as I did. So starting a book blog was such a great outlet for me! I never realized either how MANY great people out there are truly impassioned about books and are just as eager to converse about them as you are.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

I’m an avid runner, hiker, strict vegetarian, and eco-nut. My FAVORITE thing to do for fun though is to see an opera or a play. I’m fortunate in that Tampa has great Broadway shows that come every year, and I’m always anxious to take in as many as I can.

Describe a typical day in your week.

That would be very boring—get up, go to work, sneak in blog stuff while at work, come home, feed my dogs, work on my blog, and read before going to sleep. Nothing exciting at all unfortunately!

What is one thing not many people know about you?

I’m highly allergic to fire ants -- One bite on my foot and I swell up so bad I can’t walk without being in severe pain or fit into my shoes! It’s actually pretty serious and unfortunately, I live in Florida where they are everywhere!

What kind of books are your favourite?

I particularly love anything YA with supernatural elements- weres, vampires, fairies, you name it, I’m interested! And if you throw in a little romantic love triangle, then you’ve really got me hooked.

Victorian Literature would be my other passion-particularly the works of Jane Austen. Persuasion is my favorite book of all time with Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte as a close second. I’ve read them both at least a zillion times and each time they say something new to me.

Why do you like to read?

Reading is a great escape when you are having a rough day, are stressed, etc and ou just want to get away from it and dive into a book!

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

Keep them coming, I love them!

Tell us a little about your blog.

My blog is primarily geared toward Young Adult fiction, which is where I usually veer toward when I have a free moment to read. Recently I started “Tantalizing Tuesdays” where I feature an upcoming novel to tantalize people with. I offer them author interviews related to the book, reviews of the book, contests, etc. I’m really enjoying that right now.

What do you use as a bookmark?

Anything I can happen to find—dust jacket flap, post it, receipts, etc. I really need to get some pretty bookmarks though.

Describe your ideal reading place.

A quiet, cozy nook with a comfy chair, tasty cup of coffee and a big window with great scenery to look out of would be wonderful. A hammock swinging in a comfortable breeze with a view of the beach doesn’t sound so bad either!

Got any books you think people should definitely read before they die?

Hmmm….there are too many that have meant so much to me, I wouldn’t know where to begin. I always try and get my friends to read books that I’ve just read and can’t get out of my head. I just completed Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick recently and I can’t stop talking about it-it was incredible and I can’t wait for my friends to read it.

Got any future plans for your blog?

I’m just enjoying doing what I’m doing and we’ll see how that goes!

So I thought it would be a good idea to talk to all you loyal followers out there.

As you may (or may not) know I am having a paranormal month for October. Which has been going quite well. But I was thinking of doing something really different for a week or so next month. And this is what I would like to ask your opinion of.

I have talked to a few of my friends and I was thinking of having a week where I get my friends to make a guest appearance on here to talk about some of the books that they as a person really enjoy. And all of my friends are really different so you would get to hear a lot of different stuff from each of them.

Interview with Megan Crewe

Today I have an interview with Megan Crewe who is the author of Give Up the Ghost!!!

What inspired you to write Give up the Ghost?

The image of a girl talking to her ghostly sister popped into my head--I found it intriguing that a character might hang out with ghosts as an everyday thing. The story developed from there.

Do you have any plans for any other books?

Definitely! You should be seeing more paranormal and possibly some fantasy and science fiction YA novels from me in the future. :)

As an author what is your opinion of book bloggers?

I love book bloggers! I admire all the energy and thought you put into your posts and your enthusiasm for books--it's wonderful to see!

Is there anything you hope people will get from reading Give up the Ghost?

I hope people will get the idea that there might be more to their peers than it first appears, and also that even if some pretty horrible things have happened to you, there are still people out there who'll support you, and ways you can move past it.

Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to be an author?

Keep at it! The most important thing is just to keep trying. Read lots, write lots, learn everything you can about what makes a good story and then revise lots. I wrote several books before GIVE UP THE GHOST that just weren't quite there yet, but I kept at it because I loved it. Breaking into publishing can take a long time, but if you're willing to put in the effort, you can make it.

If someone gave you a negative review for one of your books what would you do?

Feel sad, consider whether I agreed with the assessment or not, anything I did agree with make a mental note to keep in mind for later books, and then get over it. :)

Yay here we are again. This week I have Rachael from The Book Muncher.

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

I always loved reading, but it was really Chelsea of The Page Flipper and later James from Book Chic who introduced me to book reviewing blogs. I thought I’d give it a try, and here I am.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

I enjoy photography and writing. Also, I’m addicted to recording movies on my Tivo.

Describe a typical day in your week.

I don’t think there is one. I mean, aside from eating, showering, and sleeping, my daily activities are dependent on where I am and what else is going on in my life. Generally though, there is some reading.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

I skipped first grade, which means I’m a year younger than virtually everyone in my grade. What makes that even more impressive is the sheer amount of honors and AP classes I take.

What kind of books is your favorite?

I don’t really have a favorite. I enjoy everything from paranormal to romance to fantasy to realistic fiction. The common denominator is that they’re generally YA.

Why do you like to read?

I read to learn about and understand people and situations I wouldn’t normally come across. I read because all stories are important, fiction or not. But mostly, I read for entertainment.

What’s your opinion on books becoming movies?

Very few books-turned-movies are spectacular. Many of them suck. I don’t generally watch movies because they’re based on a book just like I don’t pick up a book because it became a movie. It really just depends. For example, Twilight and the Harry Pottermovies are pretty good to so-so, but The Lord of the Rings: brilliant.

Tell us a little about your blog.

My blog, The Book Muncher, is my pride and joy. I started out doing only book reviews but gradually added other features like author interviews and RAD, my unique version of an author guest blog. I’d like to think my blog is a bit high tech, especially with the drop down menu in the navigation bar which took days to perfect (I love tinkering with my blog’s layout).

What do you use as a bookmark?

Generally an actual bookmark, if I can find one. My favorite bookmarks are the ones Jody Gehrman made for me. Otherwise, I use a scrap of paper, a clothing tag, a post-it, or even my iPod.

Describe your ideal reading place.

If there’s a comfortable chair, speakers with an iPod dock, and some snacks, I’m good.

Got any books you think people should definitely read before they die?

Looking for Alaska by John Green is one of the best teen books I’ve ever read. It’s amazing.

Got any future plans for your blog?

Nothing definitive. I do plan to continue book blogging for as long as I can. I’ll also probably hold more contests soon because my bookshelves are sadly overflowing.

Any final words?

Just how weird is it that my pseudonym “Scarlet Haine” is just two letters off from my interviewer’s real name, Scarlett Haines?

This week I have a very special guest. I was lucky enough to interview Sin. He is mentioned in Swoon by Nina Malkin. Without further ado I give you Sin.

An exclusive interview with Sinclair Youngblood Powers-AKA Sin-the antihero of SWOON...

How did being inside Pen's body feel?

First, thank you, dear Scarlett, for this opportunity to speak on behalf of myself and the novel SWOON, which documents some particularly fascinating periods of my life, my afterlife, my so-to-speak resurrection and such. Which brings me to my answer-my possession of Penelope Amber Leonard. Excellent question, since what boy hasn't wondered how the "other half" lives-and, likewise, what girl hasn't mused on what it's like to be a boy? It was interesting to see through female eyes, and I believe it made me more sensitive to my anima—the female aspect of a male's psyche. I became a better man having spent time so close to the heart, soul, thoughts and emotions of a woman. That said, I also found the condition confounding—for as anyone who has read SWOON knows, I had a mission to complete, and my presence within Pen was merely a stepping stone toward accomplishing it.

In the beginning did you have feelings for Dice or did you just want to get out?

From the start I found Dice intriguing. How could I not? She has such unique beauty, an intelligence you can read in her eyes, and a sensitivity beyond the average person, due to her psychic proclivities. Plus, there's that no-nonsense quality I've since learned to call her "street smarts"—immediately obvious to me, and quite provocative. But as SWOON articulates quite well, I think, the lust for vengeance is powerful—and I would let nothing keep me from requiting it. Nothing, and no one.

For the years that you were trapped between life and death were you conscious?

Conscious, no. Nor was it a dream state. Imagine the feeling you get when you've been out late the night before, and awaken knowing there's something important you must do, but at the same time crave the comfort of sleep—that sort of limbo.

How did it feel to be free?

Exhilarating. Promising. A bit bittersweet. Everything in life that I loved, and everything I took for granted, flooded me in a rush. Yet much as I wished to savor it, the opportunities to learn and love it afforded, I was driven. Indeed, that is much the essence of SWOON.

How do you feel now that you know about Hannah's death?

I just...I know. I'm glad to know the circumstances of her death, heinous though they are-so I suppose "glad" is the wrong word. Dice believed the truth would set me free, but as SWOON readers know, it did not...not exactly. Have you ever been betrayed-cheated on or lied to—and later learned how you'd been duped? Painful as it is, there is some justification in the knowing: At least you know.

What do you do now?

Ah...I busk a bit in the subways of New York. I find work here and there—though there's not much use for my farrier's skills—more for amusement and to dispel my loneliness than for money. My current consciousness isn't something I'm at liberty to discuss, and my relationship with my dearest Dice is...complicated at present. But we do communicate, and we do collaborate on the Love Advice With Sin & Dice column for the SWOON inner-site on ninamalkin.com. We get all manner of mail from SWOONIES dealing with the romantic conundrums, and I know they appreciate having a friend in Dice to discuss these matters with, as well as getting the male perspective from me. Especially from me, a boy who has...well, I believe the tag line sums it up well enough: What do you do when the boy of your dreams is too bad to be true...?

A Little Bit to Talk About

Fellow bloggers, actually. I used to look at all those amaing blogs and felt, why not start one myself?

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

Music. Lots and lots of music. Trying out new things and learning about new stuff is anoter interest too. I think I have neophilia:P

Describe a typical day in your week.

Get up at 6.30, check my mail on my cell, go to school, breeze through it, come home and sit at the comp while reading books:)

What is one thing not many people know about you?

Hmm...I have a small black mark on one side of my left hand's thumb which won't go away People think it's because of excessve nailbiting, but actually it's from back when I was 10. I was trying to peel a shrimp, and then suddenly a sharp bit of the peel pierced the side of my thumb. Hence the mark:P

What kind of books are your favourite?

YA contemporary. Thriller/suspense/mystery is a close second.

Why do you like to read?

Because it's FUN!:D On a more detailed note, I like reading because I love how I can live in another world while stll beng in my bedroom.

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

It's okay as long as the movie does not deviate from the book.

My blog is dedicated only to YA lit. Wintergirls by L.H.Anderson, Epitaph Road by David Patneaude, How It Works by Graham Marks and anything by Sarah Dessen. Oh, and the Yellow Pages. The ambulance and hospital section, more specifically.

We Are Soul Machine: The Philosophical Heart of Paranormal Fiction

Though he was a gossamer shadow, he watched her through the night. He couldn't catch his breath; he had no pulse to race. But he loved her all the same. Ardently, passionately. He loved her so fiercely that he managed to linger one minute past dawn. The next day, he lasted two.

And on the third, three- long enough for her to wake and see him and scream. She screamed again when he turned to mist and melted into dawn. Though he longed to comfort her, he couldn't. Daylight belonged to the living; moonlight belonged to the dead.

Call me crazy- I'd rather read about brothers on the run from demons, or a girl deciding to pay the blood price of a fairy's wish, than I would about things that actually happen to me. I would rather go with a character who has to walk into the morning light with her vampire boyfriend than with a girl who has to break up with a human one because he's nice and all, but he doesn't make her feel special.

To steal an absolute truth from Sarah Cross- I like it when things go boom. I want a writer to destroy something beautiful- and maybe put it back together again. Maybe. Nothing explodes a story like a liberal dose of the supernatural and I think I know why. I think it's because the supernatural makes us brave enough to talk about the meaning of life.

Every mythological creature, every being of legend, exists in two places at once.

Not only is a vampire a vampire- scary or sparkly, swilling animal blood or human, she's also our own mortality, permanently frozen. When we read about vampires, we get to hide from death, and sickness, and aging. We get to wonder whether death is a blessing or a curse. Or maybe it's just something that balances the universe- all things begin, all things must end.

Which means a ghost isn't just a ghost. Certainly, they're scary and irrational. They can whisper lullabies in a darkened room, and rock in your empty rocking chair. But they also pick up from where the vampires left off. Once we die, what is left? What makes us human- what made us alive? They are the most human monsters we have because they are ourselves, as monsters.

And the monsters that hide within us is exactly the philosophical beast we grapple with, when we read about werewolves. It's so easy to imagine ourselves as good, and just, and pleasant- which makes it hard to reconcile the bits that are angry or violent or dark. Inside werewolves and shapeshifters live the human beings who stand in line at lunch and think, wouldn't my best friend be so surprised if I slapped him right now for no reason?

Of course, that supposes you weren't meant to slap your best friend, or have evil thoughts, or both. When you run down a path to flee fictional zombies, yes! You're escaping from flesh chewing, brain-eating monsters, which is scary enough in itself! But you're also engaging in one of the oldest philosophical wonderings in the written world: do we have free will? Are we just flesh machines?

Which brings us to fairies- who encompass all of these thoughts into one brittle, beautiful package. They live forever- but should they? They never had that thing that makes them human- so they are monsters, who do horrifying things just for the sake of amusement.

But they are bound in glamour and illusion and eternity, so do they really have a choice? Aren't they entirely hollow, always wanting the one magic that humans alone possess? For all their glory and wealth and forevers- they cannot love. Or can they? Which allows us to think about forgiveness, and redemption- it lets us imagine how a monster can become a man.

I write paranormal fiction because I love making things explode. I read paranormal fiction because it dares me to scare myself. It dares me to wonder who and what I really am. Which leaves me to wonder just one more thing during this lovely Paranormal Month:

And once again it is my favourite time of the week. Where we get to meet other bloggers from around the blogosphere. Now todays guest is Briana of The Book Pixie. Without further ado here is Briana.

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

Truth is, when I first started blogging, I barely knew what a blog was. Much less how to run one. Before I began blogging, I was friends with The Stroy Siren on BookMooch. Well, I started noticing a lot of my friends on there had 'Book Review Blogs'. One day I finally looked at The Stroy Siren's and thought,"You know, I've been wanting a place where I could write and post my reviews and actually have people pay attention to them. Maybe I should start a blog." And that is basically how it all began.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

I'm extremely passionate about photography. You can actually view and/or buy my work HERE. You can also follow my photography blog HERE.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

Even if the rest of my answers are boring, I'm going to make sure this one isn't. On my 8th birthday, my teacher wouldn't let me go to the bathroom and, well, I had an accident. Thankfully I had managed to reach the bathroom by then so only one student aside from the teacher and principle knew at school. Mom called it my Ha-PEE 8th birthday.

What kind of books are your favourite?

I really don't have a favorite kind of book. I consider myself to have a very eclectic taste when it comes to books.

Why do you like to read?

Many reasons. I like to learn about the history of the world. I like explorirng places that I never could without a book. Expansion of knowledge. Developing my imagination.

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

I have seen very few movies made from books that I have liked unless I saw the movie first. In that case I tend to like both. Now, I have found that the BBC does an excellent job turning the classics into movies. For example, the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice. I understand that sometimes you need to make minor adjustments but if you aren't gonna try to stick closely to the book, then don't bother. I know one thing, you can be sure I will NEVER watch the Wings movie if they stick Miley Cyrus in it.

Tell us a little about your blog.

My blog is The Book Pixie and was started May 18th of this year. Most my reviews are YA but since I read all genres of books, you can expect to see a Non-YA review here and there. I do author interviews, memes, and hope to introduce some new things soon.

What do you use as a bookmark?

Summary: Catastrophes and misfortune continue to plague the Baudelaire orphans after they're sent to live with fearful Aunt Josephine who offers little protection against Count Olaf's treachery.

Review: I swear that this series is just getting better and better. I really loved this book too. It was really clever and highly inventive. The characters are all just super adorable and I highly admire them. I cannot wait to see if Sunny has any further talents either.

While if this was a normal book I would find myself getting a little bored at the repetitive ness of the storyline from book to book I'm actually finding it to be interesting because each book the bad guy comes up with different plans on what to do.

This ones a bit of a short review because I can't really think of what else to say. It's a really good read and while it is for a younger audience I feel it is definitely a must read book.

Review: I thought that The Bad Beginning was a good book, but I have to say that The Reptile Room totally rocked my socks off. This book is so cool.

I loved every moment of The Reptile Room, which is why I sat down and read my way through this book in just over an hour. It definitely is a worthy read.

The characters once again pulled through and it was good to see my old favourites. And also a few characters that I did not particularly like.

The story was incredibly exciting. And I definitely picked up the next book as soon as I had finished this one.

Once again, I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.

Review: This is the first time I have read this book and wow it is such a cool book. It is most likely for slightly younger readers than YA but anyone can read books of any age group.

Firstly, I felt that this book is totally an original storyline. Which was great and highly refreshing for me.

I loved how Lemony Snicket gave definitions for some of the more interesting and less known about words. I feel that reading this series will increase my vocabulary a little which is always a good thing.

The characters are all refreshing and totally neat. I loved Violet, Klaus and Sunny, they are definitely a cool bunch of kids. I really liked Olaf and I expect I will be seeing a little more of him in future books. (Ok I know I will because I've seen the movie.)

Which actually brings me to my next point. I really think that the movie does not do this book justice. If you've seen the movie but haven't read the book I suggest you read the book. You will be blown away by how cool this book is.

Throughout the book are some very cool illustrations too. One of the chapter headings is this bowl of breakfast food with raspberries on them. It is by far my favourite illustration of the whole book.

So will I be reading more of these books???

Definitely!!! They are so cool. I recommend you read this book because it is so cool.

Words With Scarlett

This week I am doing my Words with Scarlett post a little differently. I am going to get personal. Now I have been reading up on book blogger pet hates and I noticed some don't like too much personal info, well sorry but I am just a personal person.

Anyway, you probably haven't been wondering where I've been but I am going to tell you anyway.

So I got back from Scotland and then I was busy packing up house and deciding what to do with all my stuff. Unfortunately things got slightly over my head with everything going insanely hectic and I just thought to myself, why do I bother with everything. So basically I have been spending my entire time away rethinking everything. I decided to come back to blogging, and everything else in my life that I love doing.

I really did think about quitting this blogging thing because it seems as though there are so many blogs out there and I just feel disheartened by the fact that some people see it as a contest for popularity and how many books they can get. To me my blog is a fun place where I can talk about books, meet other bookish people and discuss my views on everything bookish. I'm sorry if I annoy some readers with some of the content but at the end of the day this is my blog and it is personal, and I feel it's good for me to share my views with whoever is interested.

Yay we have here Book Blogger Wednesday's again where we get to meet other bloggers. This week I have Chelsea of The Page Flipper. Without further ado I give you Chelsea.

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

Well, I've always been a reader, since I was a wee young'in. I never really had any bookish friends, though, that I could talk to about what I was reading. Every time I brought up my current book (and I never failed to), my friends and family would just get glazed-over looks in their eyes. So I turned to the internet. Then, there were only a few YA book blogs done by actual teenagers, like Teen Book Review. I got inspiration from them and decided to make my opinion heard. And that's that.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

Yes! I love movies and tv shows. Some of my favorites are American History X, Fight Club (both conveniently have Edward Norton in them), Buffy (which inconveniently doesn't, but definitely makes up for it with Angel and Spike), Gilmore Girls, Supernatural, and a ton of others. Seriously, I watch a lot. I think that kind of falls in the same vein as books, although I love reading thoroughly more - they both tell stories, and that's what I love. They're just different forms. I also love going to concerts. I get really sick of listening to the same music, and I'm picky about anything that's not live. But if I go to a concert, I'm pretty much guaranteed to enjoy it. Live music is just an entirely different experience. Oh, and writing. I love to write.

Describe a typical day in your week.

I wake up. Down some coffee. Check email, etc. Read. And, if I have anything to do, I grudgingly get ready for the day and do it. I try to get as much lazy-time in as I possibly can, though.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

I'm a ninja.

What kind of books are your favourite?

Aah. Probably paranormal/supernatural or historical fiction. But, really, it just depends on what mood I'm in. I like all genres in YA. I just have to have a variety.

Why do you like to read?

Why do you like to breathe? It's just something my natural instinct tells me to do. I love getting thrown into a story and immersing myself in someone's tale. I think people get caught up too much in their own lives, and reading lets you understand other people more.

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

I love it. I try to seperate the two as much as I can, but it's hard to do. They're both different experiences, and I know movies reach more of an audience. I absolutely love what the Harry Potter and Twilight films have done for everyone. While they were popular books before the movies, they just reach a wider audience and get more people to read.

Tell us a little about your blog.

Well. I review there, but in a casual way. I love my readers, and I like to try and get to know them. There are a lot of "formal" reviews out there, but it's my blog, so I like to give everything I write a little bit of personality. I tell my opinion, but I don't disregard any others' opinions. I have contests, book discussions, author chats - I try to give a little bit of everything. If you like YA, you should stop by and say hi.

What do you use as a bookmark?

Good question. Wish I had a more interesting answer. I kind of, um, lose my bookmarks? All the time? It's almost paranormal. It's just a gift I have. So I usually just use a folded up post-it note so that I don't ruin my actual bookmarks (which I love). I have this one that's a little black dress with pearls, and you use the hanger to hang on your page. So cute!

Any final words?

Nope. So I'll use someone else's. Either that wallpaper goes, or I do.

Describe your ideal reading place.

In a garden with an infinite supply of beverages. (Coffee! Tea! Lemonade! Coffee!) Probably sitting among the flowers. If it was really ideal, though, there would be no creepy crawly bugs. The butterflies can stay, though.

Got any books you think people should definitely read before they die?

This is a hard question. If I knew someone was dying and had to give them one last book to read before said death, that would be an entirely different answer than if I were to hand out one book to every person living. If it was the former, I'd probably give something like The Secret Garden because it's peaceful and probably the most enjoyable book I've ever read. If it was the latter, I'd probably choose To Kill a Mockingbird because it shows humanity extremely realistically. But that's for both sexes. If it was for females or gay men (and I may sound sexist here, but whatever), I'd choose the Bloody Jack series. Because it's just so damn enjoyable.

Got any future plans for your blog

Not really. As long as I still love it (and I don't see that changing anytime soon), I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. I'm sure some things will change, like the number of contests and such, but nothing planned right now.

I love reading and I started looking up book reviews online. I saw some awesome blogs like The Story Siren and thought it would be fun to start one of my own.

I love listening to music, playing with my dog, traveling, and going to the movies (among other things)

What is one thing not many people know about you?

Scout's my middle name & that's kind of what inspired my blog name. Also, I'm a vegetarian.

I love most kinds of books but my favorite are realistic fiction, historical fiction, & fantasy.

Why do you like to read?

I've always loved reading. My parents have always been buying me books and it's just something I enjoy doing. You get to learn about different places or experience different time periods. It's just a lot of fun.

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

It depends. I hate it when they totally mess up the book, but sometimes books-to-movies are great. Like with Harry Potter- I love both the books & the movies.

My Trip

I was actually going to write this yesterday but I had a ton of emails to catch up on. And other bits and pieces which will be mentioned in this post.

Day 1: I had to get on the plane with my fiancee, Travis, and his parents. And we set off for the place that is Scotland. With a couple of stopovers. What we actually did was get a plane to Heathrow Airport and from there stayed in a hotel for the night because we were all really tired.

Day 2: We all ended up driving to Scotland and sightseeing etc. We all took a turn at driving up to Aberdeen. In our rental car. So eventually we got to Aberdeen and I got to meet Travis' grandparents who were so nice. We all had supper together and chatted and then I was still pretty tired so I ended up going to bed.

Day 3: We spent the day in town going shopping and looking at shops. I didn't go to any bookstores because I would have bought half the shop and then wouldn't have been able to bring it all back!!! That evening we went out to a restaurant for dinner.

Day 4: I spent the day with Travis' mum, Linda, and his grandmother, Hannah, and we went exploring the place. Talking and we ended up having a delicious lunch in one of the cafe's in town.

For the rest of the time we went for various day trips and I also borrowed a couple of Hannah's books and read through them. I'll probably review them here later.

Then when I got back I was super tired so I spent the day sleeping. Then I spent yesterday checking emails and things like that. And I'm doing this post really quickly because I have to go round to my mum's house and help her with a garage sale she's having because she's selling all her stuff to go live in Australia with one of my older sisters and my younger sister.

I actually got back yesterday or two days ago or something I don't know I'm all confused about the date. Ok I actually did get back yesterday (Wednesday). And it is rather unfortunate to see that most of my scheduled posts didn't work.

Today I am just doing this quick little post to say hey I'm back and tomorrow I will fill you in on all the details of my eventful trip. (If you're interested.)

Welcome to another edition of Book Blogger Wednesday's. Today I have with me Eli of The Tainted Poet. So without further ado I give you Eli.

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

-I have just always loved books. I guess that combined with the need to have a place to write my thoughts down brought me to book blogging!

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

-Yes! I am a Civil War Reenactor! It is my biggest hoobby besides reading and reviewing. There is just something about being able to escape to the Victorian Era. I also love to play the piano, I sew, and I love to draw and paint. x)

Describe a typical day in your week.

-During the summer: I wake up around Noon (I know... I'm bad) and I kinda stumble around my room and on my computer till I am ready to go downstairs. I eat something, then if I have no chores, I sit down with a book for a few hours. Go back down to socialize with the parentals, get on my computer and blog. :) Then around 7 or 8 I go to the Gym.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

-That I was born on October 31st! At least, I don't think that many people know that about me.

What kind of books are your favourite?

-Anything Supernatural/Paranormal and Fantasy! Those are my absolute favorite, though I do like historicals sometimes.

Why do you like to read?

-I like to escape from my life for a bit and be someone more interesting. ;)

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

-I don't feel strongly one way or the other. The movies never change my opinion of the book. I always consider them completely separate.

This week I wanted to talk about the topic of contests. Etiquette and some bad experiences with contests. In general I wanted to talk about contests that are set by bloggers.

As you may know I've had a couple of contests on my blog so far and they've run relatively smoothly. The last contest I held was a bit more muddled up with my having to change the date to make up for my absence. Anyway I have a few categories to do with contests that I wanted to talk about and then get your opinion about them.

Anonymous Entries One thing I'm not sure of is do we take into consideration anonymous entries? I think that if they leave an email address then yeah I will definitely include them. Also, not everyone wants to be known to the whole wide world so if anyone wanted to enter by email then yeah they could.

Changing Important Information I have a friend that I was talking to anout changing information on contests and how fair or unfair it is. I know that I changed the date for my contest and some people did miss out which is really unfortunate and I am really sorry about. I vow never to change a contest date or anything ever again.
Now I wanted to share an experience that a friend of mine had with contests. She entered into a contest for a book and when she entered they didn't specify any country or anything like that. So she entered. A few weeks later she got an email saying she had won and to supply her address. When she supplied her address however, she was told that she couldn't receive the prize because she was not from the US or Canada. Somewhere along the lines the person had changed the contest to say that it was only open to residents of the US and Canada. i think it's quite sad when things like this happen. I think that people should always specify if there are going to be limitations. Don't just change it later on.

Time Zones Time Zones are another factor to consider when creating contests and entering contests. As I'm from New Zealand I am pretty much ahead of most of the world when it comes to time and so I always state that I will close the contest and draw a winner at GMT +12. I think that to avoid confusion it is a good idea to always state the time zone.

I think thats all I wanted to cover. Now I'm curious as to your opinion on these things. So if you have something to say on the matter I would really like to hear it. So comment below.

Words With Scarlett

Now I should be on a plane to Scotland and so this should be (if all goes well) my first scheduled post.

So...

This weeks Words with scarlett post is not as serious as last weeks. This week I wanted to talk about how do you keep track of all the books you read?

For me, it's putting little stickers on the spines of the books. I buy all my books so I'm allowed to lol. I colour code the stickers too. So I have red dots for I didn't like them, Blue for I'm going to give this to someone - for the blue ones I write a list of the book and who I'm giving it to. Then I have a yellow for ones that I liked but didn't overly love and green are for my favourite books and they're the ones I'm most likely to re-read.

So how do you keep track of what you read? I'm curious as to the different methods people use.

Yay my favourite time of the week. Now who do we have this week??? The lovely Kate of Another Book Blog-Whore. Without further ado I give you Kate:

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

-I was amazed when I first saw the community of book bloggers. I wanted to be one, I wanted to post reviews of the books I read and offer up my opinion. The first book blog I saw was Chicklish which I accidentally stumbled on to. I entered my first contest that day and won a copy of WAGS' World: Playing the Game. This was my first review, so if I had to place one person responsible for the starting of my blog, it would be Luisa Plaja who runs Chicklish.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

-I listen to a lot of different types of music. I love discovering a new artist or song. I'm also quite a sporty person, my favourite sport being football.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

-This is hard. I'll say something that not many book bloggers know about me, I'm a vegetarian. Haha, that was the most interesting thing I could think of!

What kind of books are your favourite?

-I love fantasy and action books. I also like books that deal with important subjects.

Why do you like to read?

-I love reading new stories, seeing different situations and forming a bond with characters. I also believe it is a form of escapism. I can forget the world around me and find myself in a different land.

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

-I like it when books become films. Sometimes I won't watch a film because I want to read the book first. I have never watched a film and then read the book. I think I wouldn't be able to enjoy the book as much.

Tell us a little about your blog.

-My blog, Another Book Blog-Whore, is a place where I review all the books I read. I am hoping to have my first contest in about a month. I also join in with memes and have author interviews.

What do you use as a bookmark?

-Whatever I have handy. I have put a pen in a book when I had to leave a book for a few minutes before. My bookmark could be a piece of paper or anything. It makes little sense as I have quite a lot of bookmarks! I also memorise page numbers a lot.

Describe your ideal reading place.

-I actually won a competition where I had to describe my ideal reading place. The link for this is here. I'm the first one in November/December 2008.

Got any books you think people should definitely read before they die?

- The Harry Potter series. It is my favourite series. I could add more for each category but I'll stick with just one series.

Got any future plans for your blog?

-Just to keep doing what I love, and try to be a bit more organised about it!

Review: Wow!!! Airhead is an amazing story. I loved it so much. I started reading through it on Thursday night and ended up staying up really late into the night to finish it. It is just that good of a book.

Firstly I am a massive sci-fi fan and this had a bit fo sci-fi which I totally loved!!!

Em is such a cool person I found her totally relatable. I love playing computer games and I'm a huge nerd just like her. I felt sorry for her when she ended up in Nikki's body but at the same time how cool would that be???

Airhead is such a perfect book to read. Seriously it is probably one of my favourite books of ALL TIME.

Airhead is definitely a really well written book and also the ending was such crazy ending I wanted to scream noooooooo don't end there!!! Now I really cannot wait to read Being Nikki, the sequel.

I definitely recommend that you read this book because you will utterly and completely love it. Just as I did.

Author Interview : Jess C. Scott

Ok everyone brace yourselves because here today I have my very first author interview. Today I have the honour of interviewing Jess C. Scott, author of EyeLeash. So without further ado here is what she has to say:

What gave you the idea to write EyeLeash in blog format?

The first draft of EyeLeash was in the form of a private, handwritten journal. After a while, the sentences and paragraphs began looking quite "compact". So I figured, why not make it a blog? It'd be a contemporary, unique, interesting way to tell a story. Also, the IM chats fit in *much* better with blog posts, as compared to traditional diary entries.

Are you currently working on any more books?

I finished a short story collection in May 2009. I currently have a young adult series in the works. If I manage to finish the first book in the series by early-mid 2010, I'll consider it an accomplishment!

Do you think that writing books in blog format will emerge as a common format?

It might -- more and more people are going to be familiar with the concept/format of a blog, as a result of the digital era we live in. However, the basics of good storytelling would still have to be a key component of the book -- regardless of the medium/format it's written in.

As an author how do you feel about book bloggers?

Ooh, I feel very appreciative of this group of people who are dedicated to all things book-related. That being said, I really wonder how book bloggers handle their various commitments. I can take ages to finish reading a book; I can only imagine the TBR pile many book bloggers must face...

What do you hope people will get out of reading EyeLeash?

I'd hope for people to be unafraid to define what love, sex, and relationships mean to them. It's easy to get caught up in "glamour", and what the media and/or popular culture says is "right", for a certain time period or generation. I kept the two main characters in EyeLeash very focused on "the theme at hand" -- perhaps this will inspire some readers to spend the time musing on matters of importance, when the need does arise ;).

This weeks words with Scarlett post is on a topic that is quite relevant at the moment. In case you haven't heard which I'm sure you probably have, there have been horrible comments left on people's book blogs. This week I wanted to talk about Book Bloggers and what I think of them etc.

So, as a new blogger I have just started out a couple of weeks ago and I have found everyone I have met in the book blogging community to be extremely nice and helpful and genuinely descent people. I have never met a more accepting bunch of people. And I know all about people being accepting. All through high school I was teased and disliked by just about everyone all because I wasn't afraid to express myself for who I am. Thats why I love book bloggers, everyone that I have come across have been super nice.

It's just a shame when some people go around and try to make everyone else feel bad about the fact that they are good bloggers and they get especially hand picked from the bunch of amazing bloggers to review books and or other things. you can read about some of the bad experiences here and here.

This brings me to my next point. There are a few blogs around that kind of beg and plead for 'free' books. To them that may be fine but I just think it's a little rude to be demanding books especially when these people have just started their blogs and it's their first or second post.

The reason why i blog about books you may ask? I do it because I love reading and it is so good to be able to share my thoughts, feelings and opinions on books to other people. I do not ask for review copies of books. I buy 99% of the books that I review. I do this because I didn't make this book blog for the purpose of getting free books. I did it so I could tell others about the amazing books I've read. I have been offered one book for review by an author and that was an e-book. I'm telling you now, that I will not be accepting any copies of actual books. This is because I can afford to buy my own books and I think there are other book bloggers out there more deserving than me.

This is of course all my own personal opinion so don't take anything to offense if you don't agree with it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

What are your thoughts and feelings on this sort of thing? As a book blogger what do you expect to get from book blogging?

This week I have an interview with Rebecca from Everything To Do With Books. Here is her interview below and a picture of her. Read on if you'd like to hear more about her. So without further ado I give you Rebecca.

Tell us a little about your blog.

I mainly review books. Books of most genres and age groups although most of the books I've been reading lately are young adult. I've had one contest so far and I'm hoping to do some more in the future and also at the moment I'm just trying out bits and pieces. I had some theme weeks. Basically my blog is just all about books.

Who or what inspired you to become a book blogger?

Basically I remember I was looking around the internet and I found a book review blog called Karin's book nook and I followed along with that for about a year before finally deciding that I should make my own because I like reading and I like talking about books.

We know you love books but is there anything else you are interested in?

Hmmm well I love maths, thats why I'm doing a major in Statistics because it's like maths and english combined in a way. Also, I love playing computer games and just surfing the internet. I also have a bass which I'm learning to play, slowly.

Describe a typical day in your week.

Well, I get up I go to my university lectures, then I come home, I do some study and then I read before going to bed. Plus depending on what day of the week it is I watch some tv. I also go to the library a lot.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

I'm scared of boats, like being on a boat terrifies me.

What kind of books are your favourite?

Basically I like to read anything but more than having favourite types I have book types that I try to avoid. So really I don't like reading books with talking animals or most diary books unless they're funny.

Why do you like to read?

I think I like reading more than anything because I can't just sit somewhere and do nothing I get bored easily and I have a really short attention span and books are one thing that can hold my attention and keep me entertained. Plus I love reading about different people and places and everything like that it's great.

Whats your opinion on books becoming movies?

I'm not a huge fan. I like to imagine the people and places and story myself and in the movies they mess up my idea of the characters and they change a lot of things. But I do try to go see the movies to compare them to the books. On occasion I'll see a movie and if I like it I'll read the book if there is one.

What do you use as a bookmark?

I actually use a piece of cardboard that you can get in hardware shops to pick out paint sample colours. It's a colour called double bass which is just black. I've had it for about three years or so now. This is going to sound really weird but I've grown quite attached to it, my bookmark has been with me through many books.

Describe your ideal reading place.

Probably a big comfy armchair that had quite a lot of room to spread out and comfortable in.

Got any books you think people should definitely read before they die?

I would have to say Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder is one, it's a really interesting book about philosophy and it really puts a lot of things into perspective and makes you think. Also, The Rag and Bone Shop by Robert Cormier, it pretty much has the best ending I have ever read in a book. It is definitely a must-read book. Also, it's really short so you doesn't take long to read but the ending is mind-blowing and I love it. In fact I want to read it again. Also, 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell are really great books. Because to me it's all about the endings. I like books to have perfect endings.

Got any future plans for your blog?

Umm at the moment I'm just going with the flow and trying out new things and seeing what I have fun with and what I should be doing more of and what I should be doing less of.

Any final words?

Final Words ... Hmm I can't really think of much to say except thanks for giving me the opportunity to be interviewed on your blog and good luck with this feature.

From the very first line I was definitely hooked into reading this one. EyeLeash is a novel in blog form in case you didn't realise it.

There were quite a few parts of this book that were totally relatable. I found myself nodding along and going yup I know what you mean there.

The characters were all pretty wicked. I liked Jade she was a funky chick. At times a little sex crazed but hey you can't have it all.

I reckon that you should definitely give this book a read because it is definitely a good one.

Review: Princess in the Spotlight

Review: Once again Mia is back and she was utterly fabulous in this book. I love the books, more so than the movies.

I just feel as though the books are more personal, probably because you're actually reading Mia's diary.

The storyline was a nifty one. It was definitely super entertaining. I really love Meg Cabot's style of writing. It's light and refreshing and she always brings some really interesting ideas to the table with her books.

I would definitely recommend reading the princess diaries series if you're looking for something fun and not too heavy.

I cannot wait to read the next book!!!
